Influence, Persuasion or Manipulation?

“Influence,” what a powerful word! According to the dictionary; “It’s the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself.” Okay, so how does this sit with you? Are you easily influenced or persuaded away from your core beliefs? And if so…how? What is it that has the ability to modify the way you feel or think? What is it that can move you away from what you believe? Is it advertising or polls? Is it peer pressure or pride? These are some questions that should be asked and answered. For without knowing, you can easily be manipulated, though sometimes subtly, without your permission or realization. It’s the power to control the thoughts and actions of others. Advertising agencies count on exactly that!

Influence has many components and plays a significant role in our daily existence. It brings about the opportunity for you to make your own choices and decisions, based on individual desires, needs, and beliefs. Where ever you look, there is some type of “something”, trying to influence or persuade you. It’s everywhere. Television, radio, store windows, supermarkets, just to name a few. You can’t go anywhere without the presence of influence or persuasion. Without being manipulated, let it bring “awareness to self”, so you know what your needs are, and what you want.

On the flip side, you can also influence others by your actions, as well as your mere presence. This can be done without whispering a sound. It’s a way of communicating, without any voice chatter. Understanding and awareness of others builds a strong rapport and allows clear and direct communications. This makes it easy for you to get your point across, without manipulating others. Perhaps a gentle power of persuasion?

Each of us has an abundance of influencing tools within. It’s how you approach a situation or conflict. It’s how you reason and logically influence something or someone to make needed changes, personal or professional. Making an emotional appeal from the heart can also be most influential. Your pleasant and positive attitude also has a direct influence on those around you. You can be a great inspiration to others, by maintaining your integrity and taking pride in your own identity, while achieving personal power.
